On February 5, the WSU women’s basketball team knocked off then No. 5 UCLA to secure the biggest win in program history. The fall from that high point has been tough with the Cougars losing four straight games since. That streak ended in a big way on Sunday with a 68-55 win against Utah.
After failing to claw back during the previous four losses, the Cougs got off to a much better start on Sunday. It took WSU just over 6 minutes to build a double digit lead, and the Cougs never looked back. They led 26-14 at the end of the first quarter and led by 15 points at halftime.
Unsurprisingly, the Cougars were led by freshman Charlisse Leger-Walker who scored 22 points. Bella Murekatete chipped in with 12 points while Johanna Teder also scored in double figures with 11 points. Krystal Leger-Walker finished with seven points and 11 assists.
The much-needed win not only snapped the losing streak, but also keeps the Cougs in the mix to make the NCAA Tournament. The Cougs now sit at 10-10 overall and 8-10 in Pac-12 play. The Cougs entered the week projected as a No. 9 seed by both ESPN and College Sports Madness. We will now wait and see how a split with Colorado and Utah impact that seeding.
The Cougars will wrap up their regular season on Sunday against Washington. WSU knocked off the Huskies 60-52 earlier this season.
