After a strong freshman season for Kyle Smith and the WSU men’s basketball team, big man Efe Abogidi was named a finalist for the Kyle Macy Award. CollegeInsider.com gives the annual award to a top freshman. Abogidi was part of a young WSU roster and jumped right into the lineup, giving WSU the type of play from the center position the team has missed in recent years.
Being named a finalist means Abogidi is a Kyle Macy All American, joining quite the list of freshmen across the country. It’s a testament to Abogidi’s basketball ability and Kyle Smith’s recruiting acumen, but Efe likely won’t need to prepare an acceptance speech. Not with the likes of Cade Cunningham, Jalen Suggs and others in the running.
Still, it’s quite the honor. Abogidi showed plenty of promise this season and the future is bright with him on the court, along with Dishon Jackson, Andrej Jakimovski and T.J. Bamba as impact freshman. Remember: Jefferson Koulibaly missed the entire season. And don’t forget about Carlos Rosario, who played limited minutes this season.
A year older a year better next year, right? Well, that’s the hope. Progression isn’t always linear, but it’s hard to not be excited about this group, especially when paired with veterans like Noah Williams and D.J. Rodman.
So congrats to Abogidi, and let’s hope this honor helps play-by-play announcers learn to pronounce his name correctly.
The WSU women await their NCAA Tournament fate
The women’s NCAA Tournament bracket will be released on Monday, and if ESPN’s bracketology is to be trusted, the Cougs should be in a solid position to get an at-large bid (crosses fingers).
The latest bracketology has WSU as a 10 seed in the Alamo region facing off agains the Texas Longhorns. The matchups are much more difficult to predict, but a WSU-Texas matchup would gives us plenty of stories about Kamie Ethridge going up against her alma mater.
Volleyball downs Oregon State
The win moves WSU to 9-2 and comes after two games were called off last weekend due to COVID issues. WSU and Oregon State get back to it tomorrow in Corvallis.
Don’t look now, but there are only seven scheduled volleyball matches left.
