One of the cool parts of participating in a major event is the anticipation of the event; in this case, for the Washington State Cougars, it’s all the days leading up to the opening game of the NCAA women’s basketball tournament.
Having not been to the Big Dance in 30 years leads a program to want to soak every step of the process, and that’s exactly what the Cougs did yesterday as they traveled to Texas, where they’re preparing to take on the South Florida Bulls in the first round (Sunday, 6:30 p.m. PT, ESPN2).
Here’s a look at their journey, via the miracle of digital media.
What’s next? I’d expect the team to hold their first practice in Texas today, so you might see some video of that. Typically, a team would do some sight seeing, but ... yanno. No chance there.
Since WSU is actually in Austin and not San Antonio, here’s to hoping they can at least get some takeout beef brisket from Franklin Barbecue or some beef ribs from La Barbecue or one of the many, many barbecue joints around town (Stiles Switch BBQ is awesome, too). Gotta let all those international players experience some authentic American food!

9 Washington State (12-11) vs. 8 South Florida (18-3)
The Cougars, making their first tournament appearance in three decades, will be facing off against one of the top mid-major programs in the country in South Florida. But Washington State, who has three wins against ranked teams this season, won’t be intimidated.
Women's basketball tournament 2021 -- Players and teams to watch, region by region | ESPN.com
The region's first-round matchup between No. 8 seed South Florida and No. 9 seed Washington State features two of the most multinational teams in the field. The Bulls have 11 players from eight countries outside the United States, and the Cougars have nine players from seven nations other than the U.S.. Both teams made history this season: South Florida won its first American Athletic Conference tournament crown, and Washington State is making the program's first NCAA appearance since 1991.
Volleyball’s got a COVID mess
The Cougars were cruising toward a massive matchup with the Washington Huskies this weekend — WSU sits in first place in the Pac-12 at 10-2 and UW is in second at 13-3. Alas, it will not come to pass, as WSU has a COVID situation. Sigh.
