WSU baseball continues hot start with win at UNLV

The Cougars are now 12-4 on the season for the first time since 2008.

Over the weekend, Cougar baseball fell just short of winning their first series at Oregon State in more than a decade. And while they couldn’t pull that off, the rebounded nicely with a big win at UNLV on Tuesday.

In game one of a two game series in Las Vegas, Washington State’s offense scored early and often in a 10-5 win over the Rebels. On offense, Jake Meyer led the way for the Cougs. the catcher had a pair of hits and three RBI, including a go-ahead two-run home run in the 4th to give WSU the lead for good. First baseman Kyle Manzardo may have only picked up one hit, but that was all he needed to extend his on-base streak to 41 games, just one shy of the WSU all-time record.

On the mound, it was a team effort with six pitchers seeing game action. Taylor Grant got the start and struggled, going just 1.1 innings, allowing three earned runs and walking three. But from there, the bullpen had a dominant run. Ethan Ross took over for Grant, pitching 1.2 scoreless innings and earning his first win of the year. Combined, WSU pitchers struck out 10 Rebels in the winning effort.

The victory takes the Cougs to 12-4 on the season for the first time since 2008. They can add on to that mark in game two of this short mid-week series against UNLV Wednesday at noon.
