Good morning, Coug fans! I hope everyone is geared up to have a great weekend. And part of that might include your Washington State Cougars hosting the University of Oregon Ducks.
The Ducks are bringing a No. 8 USA Today Coaches poll, and are currently sitting on a 26-9 record, 10-5 in the Pac 12. However, Washington State wins the matchup history with 154-131-1, despite not winning in Pullman since 2017. Is this the weekend that changes? Let’s find out.
I would guess we’ll see Aaron Zavala, highest batting average at .600, highest runs scored at 36, and highest hit count at 50. The sophomore usually plays third base or outfield.
As for pitching- the most innings pitched would be Robert Ahlstrom, a junior left handed pitcher. He has the second highest strike outs, but he also has the highest loss count.
Cullen Kafka, a junior, has the highest starts- his stats are pretty comfortable with 63 strike outs and 4 wins. I am really resisting the urge to make a Franz Kafka type of joke, it’s taking me back to my junior year of high school English class. Kafka (baseball player, not 20th century author) has the most hit batters, 8 total, so he better watch out or he might end up In The Penal Colony (this is not meant to be threatening whatsoever, I just truly cannot resist a good Kafka joke).
Moving on!
You can watch the game today at 6:05 on the WSU Livestream. I think we’re in for a really fun weekend of baseball! Everyone stay safe, and wear sunscreen. Go Cougs!

A GRIP ON SPORTS • We have really deep intellectual discussions in the Grippi household on a daily basis. Subjects as varied as whether an inexplicable baseball call is worse than an inexplicable soccer call. Whether the hall closet would make a better pantry than the basement closet.
