In their 42-39 defeat against Cal, WSU nearly managed to erase an 18-point deficit in the fourth quarter. However, their hopes were dashed when kicker Dean Janikowski missed a crucial 48-yard field goal attempt that could have tied the game. Quarterback Cam Ward played a pivotal role in the Cougars' comeback attempt, completing 35 of 60 passes for three touchdowns. Unfortunately, he also threw one interception, which happened to be a Hail Mary attempt at the buzzer. Ward's performance was a mixed bag, as he contributed to the rally but also had three fumbles. Two of those fumbles were returned for touchdowns by the Golden Bears. The first occurred in the first quarter when he lost the ball on a QB sneak, and the second happened in the fourth quarter when Ward was stripped while attempting a pass.
