Apple Cup 2012 odds: Washington a heavy favorite

So much for the early line that favored Washington State by a field goal.

Just before the season began, there was optimism in the air in Pullman. Paul Wulff was out, Mike Leach was in and high expectations were placed upon the Cougars. There was excitement, and all the promise that comes with a new season. And with that excitement came the 2012 Apple Cup odds: Washington State was favored by a field goal over Washington in the very early point spread.

It didn't actually mean much. Essentially, bookmakers were saying that the Apple Cup was a toss-up before the season began, with Washington State getting the three points associated with being the home team. Things were going to change depending on how each team's season played out.

And boy did it ever play out. Washington survived its rough stretch of games and is putting together a solid season. Washington State never did get off to a fast start and has struggled throughout. That early line for the Apple Cup? Yeah, it didn't mean a thing.

So now the Huskies are favored heavily. At last check, Washington was favored by 13-1/2 to 14 points at most Vegas books. And that seems just about right. If you took the Huskies before the season began, with that favorable line, it was probably smart.

It is the Apple Cup, though, and you never know what can happen. But on paper, the Huskies are the better team -- and by a significant margin. Good thing games aren't played on paper, I guess.
