Three bold predictions for the 2019 Apple Cup

NCAA Football: UCLA at Washington State James Snook-USA TODAY Sports

And so here we are, my friends. The Apple Cup awaits us as the last day of the regular season arrives. We had high hopes back in August, and who could blame us? We were coming off an 11-win season, returned a ton on offense, and figured the defense would be fine. Such innocent times.

The 2019 Washington State Cougars are going bowling again. That’s commendable. Now, if we could slay that one dragon that’s been roasting us since 2013, it’d be a huge way to end the regular season and prepare for whatever bowl destination we get.

I don’t know if my cardiovascular system is prepared for another game like last week’s. The Washington Huskies aren’t the Oregon State Beavers, but the Huskies also aren’t the team we’ve been used to the past few seasons. Of all the years to come into the Apple Cup with a maligned defense, it’s the season when Washington is really struggling. Still, optimism always seems to creep in this time of week.

Many of us have come to dread this game. Six straight losses will do that. But once we get a win, man, it’ll be a tremendous feeling. Let’s hope it’s today.

Three Bold Predictions

  1. Anthony Gordon will break the 5,000 yard mark after just two series.
  2. Jacob Eason will throw a pick-six to Marcus Strong.
  3. Washington State will win.

Gordon needs just 80 yards to get to 5,000. Heck, he could do it on the first drive. Eason has thrown eight interceptions this season and two of them went the other way for touchdowns. Let’s make it three today, and let’s make it Marcus Strong doing the good work (this time, without the premature celebration).

As for no. 3? Did you think I was going to sway from my predictions in May?

Go Cougs.
