The Apple Cup has been a house of horrors for the Washington State Cougars as of late. Their rival Washington Huskies have taken the last six contests, the last three of which have denied WSU a division title. The stakes are lower this year, but that doesn’t make the rivalry any less intense.
Recent Apple Cups have been so one-sided that it is hard for WSU fans to imagine taking down Washington, but this is the best Cougar offense in recent memory against the worst UW defense in recent memory. Of course, Washington’s offense faces a bad Washington State defense, so the Cougs will need to score in bunches to win.
If Mike Leach’s Air Raid offense is ever going to show out against Chris Petersen/Jimmy Lake’s UW defense, this is the year. This is the most explosive, most efficient WSU offense Leach has had, and the Huskies just don’t feature the NFL-level defensive talent that they have in the past.
The Washington offense has struggled against bad defenses on the road in the last two games. The Huskies may also not be at full strength on the offensive line. Will that matter at home, against another bad defense? We’ll find out this afternoon.
