And then there were six.

The Washington State football team took the day off from the practice field on Sunday, but will be right back on it on Monday for the start of the final week of fall camp. The Cougars have just six days of camp left with practice each day this week and a final scrimmage on Saturday.

From there, the student-athletes resume the student side of things with the first day of fall classes at WSU on August 22. The Cougars will go into regular season mode that week as they prepare for the season opener against Idaho on September 3.

We should see the depth chart round into form this week as practice shifts from camp to game prep. This past scrimmage featured a lot of younger players getting a lot of time. That may be the case again in the final scrimmage this week, but from there we should start to see more focus on the starters on both sides of the ball.

The first depth chart of the regular season will be revealing, but maybe no position is more up in the air than running back. Nakia Watson has long been the presumed starter, but freshman Jaylen Jenkins is coming off an explosive scrimmage performance. Kannon Katzer and Djouvensky Schlenbaker also appear to be in the mix for playing time. I’m fascinated to see how running back coach Mark Atuaia hands out playing time.

Only two more Mondays until game week. Until then, enjoy more snazzy highlights from the WSU creative team.

After a short week of practice to begin fall camp last week, the Cougs will have their first full week this week with five practices leading into a scrimmage on Saturday before their next day off on Sunday.

Practice will also sound and feel a bit different beginning on Tuesday when fully padded practices begin. Players wore shoulder pads in practice on Friday and Saturday and will repeat that setup on Monday before donning full pads on Tuesday.

It’s hard to know too much about a season from four fall camp practices, but more and more will come into focus as practices go on. Injuries have already cropped up at key positions, an annual tradition of all fall camps, but one you likely hope to avoid in the first four days. He’s got the arm, decision-making ability, and upside to take the offense up a few notches.

While Klay Thompson gets most of the attention when it comes to professional basketball playing Cougars, there are plenty of others playing professionally around the world. One of which is Robert Franks who toiled on some bad Ernie Kent teams.

He has since played around the world and is currently getting another shot to showcase himself stateside in the NBA Summer League. Franks recently joined the Boston Celtics’ NBA Summer League team and will get his chance to play in a handful of games.

One of those games is already in the books. Franks scored 3 points on 1-of-3 shooting in 11 minutes in Boston’s summer league opener. He also grabbed one rebound in the game.

Franks and the Celtics will play their second Summer League game tonight at 5 p.m. PT. The game will be broadcast on NBA TV for those hoping to catch a glimpse.

The 25-year-old Franks started his professional career in the NBA G-League. He played for three different organizations, the last one leading to a pair of 10-day contracts with the Orlando Magic. After being waived by the Magic, Franks headed to Australia where played last year with the Brisbane Bullets. Franks averaged 18 points and 9 rebounds per game for the Bullets.

Should this Summer League appearance not lead to another NBA shot, Franks will head back to Australia, having signed a two-year deal with the Adelaide 36ers.

Until then, we can all enjoy watching him play basketball again. If you don’t have NBA TV to watch him tonight, you can catch him on ESPN tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. PT.

It’s a holiday weekend across the country, but that doesn’t mean the WSU football coaches took a break. Instead, they seem as busy as ever, landing three more verbal commitments.

On Friday, the Cougs received a commitment from California cornerback Warren Smith, a three-star prospect with reported offers from Washington, UCLA and three more Pac-12 schools. At the time of his commitment, Smith was the second-highest-rated commitment in WSU’s 2023 recruiting class according to the 247 Sports composite ranking. That lasted for 24 hours as he was quickly bumped to No. 3 in the class after the Cougars received a verbal commitment from three-star quarterback Sam Leavitt.

Leavitt is generally ranked as a high three-star recruit. His reported offer list includes Florida State and Arizona. Leavitt comes to WSU with some Cougar ties as he has been coached by Alex Brink.

The 2022 NBA Draft cycle was nerve-wracking for Washington State fans, with Efe Abogidi and Mouhamed Gueye declaring while entering the transfer portal. Ultimately, it ended with Abogidi heading to the G-League and Gueye returning to WSU.

If you were hoping for a less eventful 2023 draft season, don’t get your hopes up. Gueye is back for his sophomore season, but his name has already popped up in 2022 NBA Draft mock drafts. Yes, those are already a thing.

Jonathan Givony of ESPN projected Gueye as the No. 46 pick in the 2023 draft. Givony is about as plugged in as anyone when it comes to college and draft prospects. Now, being a mid-second-round pick in a mock draft 12 months ahead of the real thing is hardly a lock that Gueye will be headed to the NBA next season. However, as we saw this past cycle draft decisions aren’t always as black and white as they may seem.

Abogidi isn’t selected in that particular mock draft, but he figures to be in the mix as well next season, a development that should help WSU on the recruiting trail. Developing and sending players to the NBA will be huge for the Cougars, even if it comes with a stop in the G-League. Quotes like this from Abogidi are certainly going to play a role in future recruitments.

“Without him, any of this would not be possible,” Abogidi said of Kyle Smith via a terrific profile by Jon Krawczynski of the Athletic. “He believed in me when nobody did. They gave me a chance.”

The thought of NBA mock draft concerns in June might be a distressing one, but the fact WSU players are now continually in these conversations is a very good — even though exhausting — thing.

Johnson is visiting Mississippi State first, starting on Tuesday. No reports yet on when or if he will take a visit to Pullman. It is somewhat rare for a prospect at the level of Johnson to be available this late in the recruiting cycle. That could bode well for the Cougars as Johnson is looking for an opportunity to play significant minutes and those roles are largely filled around the country.

Should Johnson find his way to Pullman, the Cougs would be added a talented scorer, capable of getting to the rim and making tough shots. He would in theory see significant minutes at the point, combining with Myles Rice, Justin Powell, TJ Bamba and Jabe Mullins in the backcourt rotation.

With rosters filling up quickly, it seems reasonable to expect Johnson to make a decision sooner rather than later.

Ward will rejoin his former coach — Incarnate Word's Eric Morris — at Washington State this season. Morris was named the Cougars’ offensive coordinator shortly after Incarnate Word’s season came to an end. Ward said his familiarity and relationship with Morris played a big role in his decision to pick the Cougars.
