The Washington State Cougars will face off against the Air Force Falcons in the 2019 Cheez-It Bowl on Friday night in what should be one of the more entertaining matchups of bowl season.
The two schools have never faced each other in football, but most people are aware at this point of the extreme contrast in styles that should make for interesting viewing: AFA’s triple option offense will run the ball about 85% of the time, while WSU’s Air Raid will throw it about the same proportion.
What should be similar, however, is that both teams figure to put together plenty of scoring drives, as neither school boasts a strong defense.
There are a couple of interesting subplots in the game, including WSU quarterback Anthony Gordon’s pursuit of the all-time NCAA single season passing yardage record. He needs 606 yards to surpass former Texas Tech Red Raiders QB (and fellow Mike Leach protege) B.J. Symons’ mark of 5,833. He also needs five TDs to throw for 50 on the season, something only eight other quarterbacks have achieved.
Additionally, WSU needs a win to avoid a losing season, something that’s definitely on the minds of the players.
