It was never a game. Again.

The No. 5 Washington Huskies walked into Martin Stadium with the Pac-12 title on the line and did what they usually do: Act like they owned the place by soundly beating No. 23 Washington State, 45-17.

The Cougars finish the regular season 8-4 overall and 7-2 in the Pac-12 — a one-game improvement in the standings over 2015, but the same record with which they finished a year ago.

In what was billed as the most significant Apple Cup in decades, only one team bothered to show up and play like it, as the Huskies raced out to a 28-3 lead in the first quarter to more or less end the game before some people had even reached their seats.

At that point, UW was averaging more than 11 yards per play and on pace for more than 1,100 yards.

The Cougs did try to put up a little bit of a fight — they closed to 28-10 in the second quarter after converting a John Ross fumble deep in UW territory into a TD — but Washington came right back with another touchdown and that was pretty much that, especially after WSU’s half ended with Luke Falk floating a duck into triple coverage in the end zone from inside the UW 10.

If you wanted to be charitable, you could even say that WSU tried to make it interesting in the third quarter, in which the Cougars outgained the Huskies 160-13. But the Cougars could only put seven points on the board after Washington stopped them at the 1-yard-line on 4th-and-goal at the end of the quarter — the second such time the Huskies had done so in the game.

On six red zone opportunities, WSU came away with just two touchdowns and a field goal.

Falk had another poor game, completing just 33-of-50 for 269 yards, 1 touchdown and 3 interceptions. It was just the second time in his career — and first time since his second start as a freshman — that Falk threw more interceptions than touchdowns in a game.

Gabe Marks did everything he could, catching 11 balls for 112 yards and a touchdown.

In five Apple Cups, Mike Leach has now been outscored 176-88. In three Apple Cups against Chris Peterson, Leach has been outscored 121-40. WSU has turned the ball over 11 times in the last two Apple Cups.

Washington heads to the Pac-12 Championship game on Friday. WSU, which will surely be unranked after this evisceration, awaits its bowl fate, which has taken quite the hit over the last two weeks.

We’ll keep you up to date with all the developments in this game to decide the Pac-12 North.

The Pac-12 North’s berth to the Pac-12 Championship Game is on the line today as No. 5 Washington and No. 23 Washington State face off in one of the more anticipated Apple Cups in the series’ 109-year history.

Will it be the Cougs who upset their more highly ranked cross-state rivals for the right to play for a spot in the Rose Bowl? Or will it be the Huskies who keep their dream alive for a spot on the College Football Playoff?

We’ll update you throughout the game with the big plays and developments.

The Cougars win the toss and defer. And we’re underway!

11:33 1st quarter: UW scores the first TD on a Myles Gaskin 2-yard run
The first drive of the game doesn’t turn out real well for WSU, which gets off to an ominous start when the Cougars give up a pair of third down conversions — the first one coming early, the second one coming on the TD run. In between, there was a 50-yard completion from wide receiver Dante Pettis to tight end Darrell Daniels on UW’s first trick play of the game.
UW 7, WSU 0

7:45 1st quarter: UW scores again on an 18-yard pass from Jake Browning to Dante Pettis.
The Cougars were just getting started on offense when Jamal Morrow fumbled the ball at the end of an 11-yard run. A few plays later — on 2nd-and-goal from the 18 after a pair of UW penalties — Browning had all day to find Pettis coming across the end zone.
UW 14, WSU 0

5:49 1st quarter: WSU is on the board with a 37-yard Erik Powell field goal
WSU jumpstarted it second drive with a 41-yard return. After Luke Falk found Robert Lewis for a 34-yard completion over the middle, the drive stalled when Isaiah Johnson-Mack and C.J. Dimry dropped consecutive passes on second and third down from the UW 20.
UW 14, WSU 3

4:59 1st quarter: Jake Browning hits Dante Pettis for a 61-yard touchdown
Jake Browning had all day, and Dante Pettis outjumped Darrien Molton for the ball before stepping out of Molton’s tackle. Three drives, three TDs for UW. This is a disaster for WSU.
UW 21, WSU 3

0:17 1st quarter: Jake Browning to John Ross for a 6-yard TD
It’s a fade in the corner that Molton was powerless to stop, and the rout is on ... after one quarter. Washington is on pace for more than 1,100 total yards.
UW 28, WSU 3

8:16 2nd quarter: UW stuffs WSU on 4th and goal
After the WSU defense finally got a stop, Jamal Morrow grabbed a short, line-drive punt and returned it 64 yards to the Washington 6-yard-line. A false start on first down pushed it back to the 11, and WSU ran it four consecutive times, the final attempt from the 2-yard-line by Gerard Wicks coming up about an inch short.
UW 28, WSU 3

6:07 2nd quarter: WSU comes back with a TD off a turnover
Things were looking even more bleak than before after WSU was unable to convert a TD from the Washington 6, but Shalom Luani came up with his first big play of the game when he forced Ross into a fumble, which was recovered by Jalen Thompson.

3:21 2nd quarter: Levon Coleman scores UW’s 5th TD on a 22-yard run
The good vibes were short lived, as UW drove right back down the field for 85 yards in just 7 plays. Coleman ran virtually untouched into the end zone.
UW 35, WSU 10

0:14 2nd quarter: Luke Falk intercepted in the end zone
When you talk yourself into ways your team could potentially get back into a game, you tell yourself things like “if they can score here and then score on the first possession of the second half, it’s a game.” WSU drove 66 yards in 11 plays to the UW 9-yard-line, but the drive ended when Falk inexplicably lofted a pass into triple coverage and it was easily picked off to end the threat.
UW 35, WSU 10

It capped a 15-play, 69-yard drive. Every yard is hard against this Washington defense.
UW 35, WSU 17

0:37 3rd quarter: UW stones WSU on the goal line ... again
After getting a defensive stop, the Cougs went back to work on offense, driving 81 yards in 17 plays all the way down to the UW 1-yard-line. Faced with another 4th-and-goal from the 1, WSU tried to run the ball again. And UW’s stout defensive line held up, again. Gerard Wicks never made it back to the line of scrimmage, and the Cougs turned the ball over on downs, again.
UW 35, WSU 17

10:56 4th quarter: UW caps a 99-yard drive with another Coleman TD
It was probably only a matter of time, but the UW offense woke back up after posting just 13 yards in the third quarter. The WSU defense again struggled to tackle, and Coleman fought his way into the end zone for a 15-yard score.
UW 42, WSU 17

It's time.

After all the buildup, it's finally here. Washington State and Washington take the field for the 109th Apple Cup, and this time the stakes are through the roof. You know the setup by now: The winner of the 2016 Apple Cup will play for the Pac-12 championship next week. The Cougars and Huskies separated themselves from the field back in October, and haven't looked back since.

The only stumbles for each team so far have been recent: Washington, first, dropped a game to a very USC team and Washington State fell to Colorado in Boulder last week. Each team has one loss in conference play, and the Huskies have one loss overall.

This is the type of rivalry game you dream of. The chance to end a rival's season, and extend your own season to a title game and play for a shot at the Rose Bowl. After all the bad seasons, all the bad, recent Apple Cups, here we are.

This is your game thread. Come talk out that nervous energy, and follow the game, here.

Get your Black Friday started right with all there is to read on the game.

The most anticipated Apple Cup in a long, long time has finally arrived. I won’t bore you with hundreds of words rehashing all the different angles — a game this big has already generated more words than any of us could possibly read.

Instead, I’ll direct you to the one story out of the dozen or so below that you must read: A profile in the Washington Post on Gabe Marks.

Before and during the No. 23 Cougars’ run to 8-3 and a colossal tussle Friday with No. 5 Washington, Marks’s meetings with reporters have become should-watch YouTube for insight, candor and humor, often in a flat voice nearing deadpan. The sessions often stretch past 20 minutes, unusual for a college athlete. They’re opinionated without being arrogant, sharp without being mean, explanatory without being stale, novel without being brash, worthy of attention without being attention-needy.

In a nation full of canned brevities, Marks speaks in fresh block quotations.

It’s not so much that it breaks new ground, but it’s really cool to see a player who already has cemented himself as an all-time favorite of ours catch the attention of the national media.

And on a day when he’ll play his final game in Martin Stadium, it seems fitting to enjoy Marks one last time.

It’s a big Apple Cup. Find out how to follow it here.

The No. 5 Washington Huskies will try to keep their College Football Playoff hopes alive when they visit the No. 23 Washington State Cougars on Friday afternoon. Both teams come in with just one loss in conference play, so the winner will advance to the Pac-12 Championship game next Saturday to face either USC or Colorado. The last time the two schools came into their rivalry game knowing a championship was on the line for the victor was 1936.

WSU opened Pac-12 play with seven consecutive wins before falling at Colorado last week. The Cougars are 8-3 overall, and risk falling far down the Pac-12 bowl pecking order with a loss. The Huskies ran off nine wins to start the season before a loss to red-hot USC at home. At the time, it looked to be a death blow to UW’s playoff hopes. However, sitting at No. 5 with Nos. 2 and 3 set to play each other, the Huskies are very likely to make the playoff if they win out.

UW holds a three-game winning streak in the series, with the last WSU victory coming in 2012. That happened in Pullman, as an underdog Cougar squad overcame an 18-point 4th-quarter deficit to win in overtime. The Cougs would certainly take any similar result on Friday.
