Just how clinical was WSU's quarterback against the Golden Bears, as he threw for 521 yards? We turn the 67 throws into numbers and pictures to help you visualize.

Connor Halliday and the Wazzu offense had something of a coming out party in Memorial Coliseum, taking advantage of a young, injury riddled California Golden Bear defense to the tune of 570 yards. Halliday went 41 of 67 (61.2%) for 521 yards, spreading the wealth between 8 receivers and 3 running backs.

Let's take a look at some breakdowns of how Halliday put this together.

On its surface, all the numbers look pretty solid. The yard per target (YPT) rates are a little low for Z due to a poor completion rate, but other than that, nothing really stands out. If we remove a 72-yard TD by Vince Mayle from the X data and a 68 yard TD by Marcus Mason from the F data, the overall numbers look a lot less pretty. Stats for this game got a huge boost from a few big plays (I'm sure Mark will have a more detailed look in his WR breakdown later this week), and fortunately big plays are part of the game.

Aside from those few explosives, Halliday was a short-yardage surgeon on Saturday. We mapped out how he diced up the Cal defense, quarter by quarter. The charts have four colors; red - completion, blue - incompletion, green - touchdown, black - interception. The spots are placed where the receivers either caught the ball, or were when the pass was incomplete. There weren't any throwaways. The numbers in the spots are their chronological order. I didn't include data for pass interference, or other penalties that negated the play. In the table below I included the total yardage from the reception, and the routes. These aren't the plays, just the routes they ran. I didn't try to parse out whether it was an option route, dig they broke off, flattened corner, or anything else like that.

"Vert - BS" is a back shoulder throw at a vertical route; "Mo." is motion; "PA" is play action; "Sc." is scramble

Halliday was extremely successful in the short yardage passing game, hitting 80% of his targets within five yards. The completion percentage dropped off to 58% for the intermediate routes. His fantastic 10-for-12 third quarter effort for routes between five and fifteen yards stood out when compared to the other quarters, and is the sole reason he ended above 50% in that range on the day.

Obviously the deep ball is going to be a lower percentage throw, but there's still some room for improvement on the 27% completion rate. Getting that within the 33% to 40% range would really make the offense deadly, and the Cougs were nearly there -- it wasn't for lack of opportunities. A couple of deep attempts, where Gabe Marks had a step, were just a tad overthrown, and a few pass interference calls took away what would've been solid opportunities for a catch.

What shouldn't surprise anybody familiar with this offense is that 83.5% of Halliday's targets were within 15 yards, and the highest producing routes, in terms of total yardage, came from routes ran closest to the line of scrimmage. Again, this is helped (massively) by Mason's incredible TD scamper off a swing pass.

Halliday carved up the Bears on the underneath routes, and benefited from some yards after catch that was missing for the first few games of the season. When the receivers (and running backs) start making plays with the ball, the offensive production immediately skyrockets. If Halliday can continue to hit the short stuff at a high rate, and stretch the field even just a little more efficiently (2-4 completions), this offense could really be a lot to handle for any of the defenses remaining on the schedule.

This is the first time I've done charts like this. What do you think? Are they worth doing again? Have any suggestions for improving them?

And any thoughts on what you see in the data above?

What did we like? Who impressed? What needs work? We reflect on the Cougs' second road victory of the season.

As I watched WSU beat up on Cal, I couldn't help but think back on the past five years -- you know, when the Cougs were the ones regularly on the business end of these kinds of results.

I know I was one of the people at the beginning of this season who said this team probably was a year away from making a serious push to a bowl game, and now that the team sits at 4-2 halfway through the season, it's amazing how much progress these guys have made under Mike Leach.

Case in point: Comfortably beating up on a Pac-12 opponent -- on the road, no less -- while hardly playing a flawless game.

Recap, highlights and more

Check out our StoryStream for complete coverage of the big win over Cal.

I'm sure there will be some who argue that says more about how far Cal has fallen amid its own coaching change. I won't argue that the Golden Bears are down; the problems presented by youth and injuries are plain to see. As I alluded to earlier, there's probably nobody in the country who recognizes this phenomenon better than us.

But if there's something we all know better than everyone else, too, it's that it really didn't matter how far down everyone else was, they were probably going to curb stomp WSU. And in a season and a half under Mike Leach, we've gone from that to a performance that's a little bit sloppy -- Leach's word, used repeatedly postgame -- but still good enough to win by a handful of touchdowns.

Leach insisted last year that his team was a lot closer to being pretty good than it realized. It appears these guys have caught on.

What we liked

The offensive line! One of my biggest fears going into the game was that Connor Halliday, suffering from an apparent hip injury, would be under just enough duress to affect his delivery. And we all know what happens when Halliday's delivery is affected.

The worrying was for naught. Halliday took just one sack all day, and that was after he stepped up into the pocket to try and buy more time after being unable to find an open receiver. Thanks to the work of the offensive line -- which started with Matt Goetz at right guard and John Fullington at right tackle for the first time all year -- Halliday rarely was touched and was able to deliver balls with confidence.

My favorite play of the day from the line? On Marcus Mason's touchdown catch and run, left tackle Gunnar Eklund is busting his tail down the sideline to try and escort Mason to the end zone. Check it out to here, where Mason's TD is the No. 2 play of the week.

I don't know when the last time was that WSU allowed one sack or fewer in a conference game (perhaps I should get Mark on the CougCenter hotline), but I can't imagine it was anytime recently. The Cougs now have allowed 10 sacks this season, and while that's still only good for 60th nationally in sacks per game, consider that WSU would generally have around 25 sacks right now at the pace of most of the recent past.

Yeah, they'll occasionally get beat because they still don't always matchup athletically -- the safety was a prime example of that -- but you rarely see them get beat through sheer confusion on a blitz or stunt. What a change. And I couldn't be happier for guys who usually are unsung heroes.

What needs to improve

This was too common.

For the second consecutive week, it's the secondary. You thought Halliday had a pretty good day at 7.8 yards per attempt? Jared Goff's YPA was 8.3 as he ended up throwing for more than 500 yards*. Chris Harper had 14 catches for 231 yards.

*Oh, you thought Goff only had 489 yards? Cal went back and "corrected" the stats, changing a play they originally classified as a run by Chris Harper into a forward pass. And good news! It wasn't an opponent record. That distinction appears to belong to ASU's Paul Justin, who threw for 534 yards back in 1989.

Sure, there were a couple of interceptions, although the second one came from Zach Kline on he meaningless fourth quarter drive. The ease with which the Golden Bears moved the ball up and down the field was alarming, particularly in the first half: Goff was 21-of-34 for 345 yards at the break.

The flip side of that, of course, is that Goff was "just" 12-of-25 for 159 yards in the second half. Anecdotally, it seemed the Cougs were getting more pressure and Goff grew more erratic, but if you believe that doesn't explain all of it, it does lend credence to Leach's assessment after the game that much of what the secondary is suffering from is correctable, with the assumption being that some of those corrections started taking hold in the second half.

I'm going to choose to hold onto that hope with Sean Mannion and Brandin Cooks coming to town. Sigh.

Which player impressed?

Connor Halliday was flat awesome.

Connor Halliday deserves every plaudit that anyone wants to send his way this week. I'm sure there still will be some fans who want to hold onto their grudges with him, but I'll be frank: Any criticism of Halliday this week is a "you" problem, and not a "him" problem.

He wasn't perfect. He certainly left some yards and touchdowns out on the field, and yes, he threw another interception. But he was plenty good enough to win this game -- as we've been over, no small feat for this program -- and he did it on basically one good leg. He clearly was in pain.

I wondered aloud on Twitter how the halftime break would affect Halliday's hip. How did he respond to the 15 minutes away from the field? By completing 15-of-18 passes in the third quarter for 201 yards. Yep.

Of course there still are things to work on, and you know that Leach and Halliday will be doing that this week. But from a fan perspective, I don't know how you can expect anything more out of your quarterback. He showed his teammates what it means to play through pain, and he ended up throwing for the second-most yards in school history in the process.

Honorable mention: Vince Mayle, Marcus Mason, Ioane Gauta, Toni Pole, Deone Bucannon.

Which player underwhelmed?

We already went over the secondary, so I won't dwell on it. As you can see from the Honorable Mention list in the previous section, there were a lot of individual performances to love. So we'll just leave it at that.

Next up

After a couple of weeks away, the Cougs get back to Martin Stadium for their first real home Pac-12 game of the year. Think about that: They have yet to play a Pac-12 game in Pullman and they have a 2-1 conference record. That's borderline unbelievable, given where this program has been.

The Beavers are 4-1, having won four consecutive games after a season-opening loss at home to Eastern Washington. They'd be 5-0 if not for giving up the winning touchdown to the Eagles with 18 seconds to go. But then again, they could be 2-3 if they hadn't beaten Utah in overtime and hadn't been gifted a win thanks to an epic meltdown by San Diego State.

For the second consecutive week, the Cougars will face a pass-happy team. Only this time, it's a pass-happy team with a better quarterback (Sean Mannion) who only has thrown two interceptions, and a better top wide receiver (Brandin Cooks) who is leading the country in receiving yards, receptions and touchdowns. Let's hope Mike Leach is right about the pass defense's issues being correctable.

OSU's defense, however, is much less scary -- the Beavers are 98th nationally in yards per play given up after having played some pretty weak competition. It's not crazy to think there could be 100 points scored.

Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. on either ESPN2 or ESPNU.

The Cougs went into Berkeley and beat the Bears for the first time in 9 tries. There were a lot of great plays and there were even more chest bumps. We've got the whole story for you in this week's GIF-a-Palooza

The Cougars have been in this position before. They had high hopes entering a game against a powerhouse, they got destroyed, they tried to gather themselves in a winnable game the next week and got blown out.

This was a big game. They had to show that the Stanford game wasn't going to derail the season. They had to show that the road conference win at USC wasn't a fluke. And, most of all, they had to show that they can jump really high in coordination and collide with each other in midair. They did all those things and more.

Unfortunately for me, I was working. I was in the Kibbie Dome in order to see Fresno State schlac the Idaho Vandals. I'll update you on my mental state throughout the game as this article continues.

Without any further adieu, here it is: All the GIF from Saturday's win over Cal in (mostly) chronological order:

Remember the Idaho game a couple of weeks ago? Remember the first play for the offense where Halliday missed a wide open receiver?

Well, it kind of happened again. After getting a turnover deep in their territory, Connor Halliday had an open man down the far sideline and missed him. Sure, he didn't have the 20 yards of separation he had against Idaho, but he had plenty of separation to take it to the house had there been a good throw.

A couple plays later, Halliday hits Gabe Marks down the sideline, who makes an absolutely ridiculous catch.

To finish the drive, another receiver makes another great catch. Here's Vince Mayle taking it to the house to make it 7-0.

Let's take a closer look and see just how close Mayle was to dropping this football.

I'm a big fan of Conan O'Brien. His shows now are great, but his "Late Night" shows I watched growing up were even better. The zaniness and randomness of his humor was just amazing. Why does this anecdote belong in the recap? Because Cal scored a safety against WSU.

That safety reminded me one of one of my favorite Conan bits of all time which happens to be a parody of the Men Without Hats song "The Safety Dance". Don't like the seemingly unconnected nature of that video and a football safety? TOO BAD. This is my weekly GIF recap article. Why don't you just make your own, Mr. Negative?

Anyway, let's get back on track with a Cal player who thought he was a gymnast and was penalized for diving into the endzone a good 40 yards after he knew the play was blown dead.

He didn't even stick the landing. The Russian judge gives it a 3.

Pro tip for the Cal defense: You should probably block Junior Guata in future situations.

In this GIF, Marcus Mason scores a 68-yard touchdown by running a whole lot more than 68 yards.

That led us to half time in Berkeley. At this point in the game, I was pretty miserable. The game in Moscow was already a huge blowout in the 1st quarter, the TV production I was working on was having some pretty major technical issues and I just really wanted to be at home watching the Cougs. The score was 28-0, but it wasn't even that close.

Meanwhile, back in Berkeley...

On a serious note, congrats to Teondray Caldwell on his first touchdown of the year.

However, Caldwell's touchdown leads me to what has become very prevalent, you might say it's an outbreak, an epidemic or maybe even an epizootic, on this Cougar football team: chest bumps. Here's Caldwell following his TD:

After Vince Mayle's second TD...

...There were more chest bumps.

Then, following the Daquawn Brown interception in the fourth quarter...

...There were even more (also, an embarrassing missed high-five type thing with Cooper).

This isn't a new thing with Cougar football. The chest bumps have been around the program for years. Who doesn't remember this classic from a couple of years ago? Or this one from practice last year? Or this one from seemingly the same practice from last year?

Listen, I don't care what you do after touchdowns, as long as you score touchdowns. Just be careful. I think chest bumps can be dangerous and may result in injury. Here's one from a couple of weeks ago:

I didn't have time to look it up, but I'm pretty sure that coach died as a result of that bump. Please, Cougs... Please practice safe chest bumps.

That will do it for the game. As for me, I had to sit through the rest of the Idaho game. It ended 61-14, and it wasn't even that close. Fresno State dominated every facet of the game. It was long, and it wasn't helped by Paul Petrino. When Idaho got the ball back with 30 seconds left, he ran a two minute drill offense, getting out of bounds on every pass. When his QB was sacked with 5 seconds to go, he let the clock run down to 1 second before using a timeout in order to run one more play from his own 25 yard line (he was sacked again). Troll on Petrino. Troll on...

On top of the production issues, the lack of sleep, the band sitting right in front of me, the seemingly endless length of the game and the overall trollishness of Paul Petrino I had to deal with the nightmares that this guys gave me:

These galleries are so much more fun after a win.

If you're still basking in the glow of WSU exceeding its win total from all of 2012 and moving one step closer to bowl eligibility, these photos of the Cougars will do nothing to harsh your buzz.

And if you're a Seahawks and Sounders fan, like me, you need to be reminded that part of this weekend was really, really awesome!

Some creative shots in here by Kirby Lee of USA TODAY Sports. It starts with a great shot of the team singing the fight song with the contingent of Cougs who made it to the game, and includes an adorable picture of a sad, sad little boy Cal fan.

It's OK, little buddy. We all know how you feel after what we've gone through for the past half decade. Aw, heck, who am I kidding -- we all know how he feels after what we've all gone through following this team for pretty all of our adult lives. I'd promise him it will get better, but Cal fans are the most pessimistic bunch this side of Pullman. Getting your doors blown off at home by WSU doesn't help, I don't think.

Enjoy the pictures.

More highlights, because we know you can't get enough of them.

Washington State blew out the Cal Golden Bears, 44-22, on Saturday afternoon for its second-straight conference road win. Unlike the grinding win over USC, there were plenty of big plays from the Cougs on both sides of the ball in Berkeley, and that makes for a much more entertaining highlight package.

It seems that WSU only has the rights to show the television angles in their highlight package during home games. Against Auburn, USC and now Cal the highlights have come from on-field angles. Against Southern Utah and Idaho, we were treated to the high sideline view.

No matter, it's still exciting to re-live Vince Mayle's two touchdown catches, Marcus Mason coming out of the backfield to make huge plays in the passing game and Junior Gauta blowing throw the Cal offensive line for a pair of sacks.

Interesting note as you enjoy the highlight reel: This is the first time WSU has defeated both USC and Cal on the road in the same season since 2000. This year's version of the Cougs has already matched the 2000 team's win total, and needs to win at least two of its final six games to reach a bowl for the first time in 2003.

Sunday morning links are fun again!

It's amazing what 12 months can do.

A year ago today, the Cougars lost an ugly 19-6 game to Oregon State. The loss was WSU's third in a row and dropped the Cougars to 2-4 on the season. Connor Halliday played horribly, finishing 9-of-20 for 81 yards and three interceptions. That game may not have been the low point of last season, but it was close.

Now, a year later WSU is 4-2 and coming off a 44-22 road win against Cal. The Cougars have already bettered their win total from last season and have notched two conference road wins. Sitting here thinking about Saturday's game, it's amazing the change that's happened in such a short period of time.

My friend Nate and I usually text during and after WSU games. A big victory during the last few seasons resulted in a lot of all caps, an obnoxious amount of exclamation points and a massive celebration. Yesterday's conversation was less pure jubilation and more excitement about the performance of the offensive line and the steps the program has taken. A similar comment was made in the postgame thread. WSU fans are no longer losing their minds over a conference win. We're happy, we're excited, but it's no longer a shock to see the Cougars play well, even in conference play. Think about the last five years and you realize just how far this program has come.

Just how does Connor Halliday's record-setting performance fit into the annals of WSU history? We'll show you.

When Mike Leach was hired to coach at WSU, we knew it was only a matter of when -- not if -- his quarterbacks would rewrite the record books in Pullman. It might have taken a little longer than expected, but Saturday's win over Cal just might be the first step in the Air Raid revolution.

RECAP: Cougs roll past Bears, 44-22
Connor Halliday lights up the Golden Bears as WSU improves to 4-2, just two wins from bowl eligibility.

Halliday threw for 521 yards, the second most in WSU history behind only Alex Brink's 531-yard performance against Oregon State in 2005. Halliday undoubtedly could have passed Brink, but Leach threw the offense in first gear in the final two series to run out the clock. (Rarely does Leach have mercy on an opponent, but equally rarely is he facing a former assistant on the opposite sideline.)

While he fell short of the single-game yardage record, Halliday did set the school record for pass attempts in a game with 67. While 67 is an amazing number in and of itself, it becomes even more incredible in the context of the leg injury Halliday suffered last week against Stanford, which was clearly causing him discomfort throughout the game. His 41 completions were the second most in a game in school history.

Washington State remained undefeated in games played in the state of California with a 44-22 win against Cal.

Another Saturday, another road Pac-12 road win for Washington State. The Cougars rebounded from the Stanford debacle and moved one win closer to bowl eligibility with a 44-22 win against the Cal Bears.

It may not have been the prettiest game of the year, with WSU allowing several explosive plays on defense, but the Cougars did enough to come away with the victory. The winning combination on Saturday was a metric ton of passing yards and some timely forced turnovers. Connor Halliday finished the game with a career-high 521 yards and the WSU defense forced five turnovers.

The game didn't start out very well with the Bears driving deep into WSU territory on their first offensive possession. The Cougars caught a break with Cal fumbling inside the five yard line and Toni Pole jumping on the fumble. It was one of two fumbles Pole recovered inside WSU's 5-yard line.

WSU's wide receivers proved to be too much for the Cal secondary. Cougars were open on the vast majority of plays and the offensive line did an excellent job of providing protection for Halliday. The result was WSU's best offensive performance under Mike Leach. Marcus Mason weaved his way through Cal's defense twice, finishing with 118 receiving yards. Vince Mayle imposed his physical will on the Bears racking up 113 receiving yards and two touchdowns. His 72-yard touchdown reception put WSU up 35-15 and was one of the pivotal plays of the second half. He also bulldozed over a Cal defender in the open field just to add an exclamation point to the touchdown.

Halliday proved once again that he may literally be tough as nails. He appeared to still be hobbled from the shot he took against Stanford. He gutted it out the entire game, though, making key throws when WSU needed them. Was he perfect? Far from it, but he put everything he had on the field and finished the game with more than 500 passing yards and three touchdowns.

As impressive as the final score was, WSU definitely has room to improve. Defensive breakdowns and a few offensive mistakes kept the Cougars from winning by even more. Those nits can be picked another time, however, because the bottom line is WSU went on the road and picked up a conference win ... again.

Go Cougs.
