So that Mike Leach guy is a little popular.

Wednesday was Day 1 of Pac-12 media day which the conference should probably rename Mike Leach story hour. Leach was one of the main attractions of Day 1 with his nearly 40-minute session with the media covering the usual topics. Gnats, bear hunting, Geronimo, you know the usual.

With his prowess for telling stories, Leach is a star of what can be a rather dull media day. Session after session of the same cliches can get very old, very quickly. As you might expect, Leach was mentioned in one or two ... or a dozen stories. If you missed anything from Day 1, our story stream has you covered with videos, tweets and more.

If you'd like to read the full transcript of Leach's session with the media, you can do that here. Britton Ransford of WazzuWatch gathered a bunch of links, including 11 radio appearances from Halliday, Monroe and Leach.
On Wednesday, Washington State coach Mike Leach, quarterback Connor Halliday and linebacker Darryl Monroe had lots of time to speak to reporters without side distractions such as preparing for football games. In the relaxed atmosphere at Paramount Studios the Cougars opened up about a variety of topics once they were done with TV interviews.

Between riffs on heat in Palm Desert and cold in Wyoming, gnats in Georgia and restaurants in Pullman, Mike Leach managed to slip in a few observations on his football team Wednesday at the Pac-12 football media days.

Best quote of the day Gemmell: Had a nice little chat with WSU linebacker Darryl Monroe about the fallout from the bowl game and what he thinks when he hears someone use the expression, "Coug’d it": "For me, Coug’d should mean you just went out there and dominated. I don’t understand where this impression of 'Coug’d it' means you did something in a negative light. Maybe the Urban Dictionary should think about rewriting that definition to 'Coug’d it means completely dominated your opponent.'"

With the high-stress nature of their job, college football coaches unwind off of the field a number of ways. For some coaches, that might be fishing or golfing, but for Washington State head coach Mike Leach, it is writing a book about Apache warrior Geronimo.

Miss anything from Pac-12 media day? You can now watch, or re-watch Washington State's sessions.

Mike Leach, Connor Halliday and Darryl Monroe made the rounds at Pac-12 media day on Wednesday. If you missed their appearances with the Pac-12 Network studio show, you can now catch them thanks to some embeddable video from Pac-12.org.

Mike Leach:

Here is Leach with the Pac-12 Network crew, including former Oregon defensive coordinator Nick Aliotti. It wasn't as awkward as you may think.

Bruce Feldman telling Mike Leach stories:

Gnats, acting, doughnuts, partying and a little football. It couldn't be anything but WSU at Pac-12 media day.

Washington State's appearance at Pac-12 media day is in the books and as you probably expected, it was all over the place. Mike Leach was in midseason storytelling form, rambling on about his path to the NFL, gnats, doughnuts and a host of other topics. The contingent WSU sent was strong with Darryl Monroe and Connor Halliday also having successful runs through media day.

The Pac-12 Network's coverage of media day was a little different than previous years. Instead of showing the main media sessions, Pac-12 Network opted for a studio show that featured interviews with the various participants. Leach dropped a lot of his best gold during the main media session and thanks to Jacob Thorpe of the Spokesman Review, you can watch some of it.

People are talking about football. Let's talk about them talking about football.

The first of two Pac-12 media days is underway in Los Angeles. The media poll has already been released -- the Cougars were picked fifth in the Pac-12 North -- Larry Scott held his state of the conference and teams have already started taking the stage for their media sessions.

Hopefully things pick up a bit when Mike Leach, Darryl Monroe and Connor Halliday take the stage for the Cougars. WSU media session was tentatively scheduled to start at 12:50 p.m. PT, although that may have changed. Larry Scott was initially scheduled to address the media at 11:17 a.m. but instead went much earlier. We'll see how that impacts the rest of the schedule. Either way, WSU should be on stage sometime between 12:30 and 1 p.m.

You can watch media day on the Pac-12 Network or using the free stream at the top of this post.

The Pac-12 media poll is out and WSU is right where we expected.

There weren't many surprises when the Pac-12 media poll was released on Wednesday. Oregon was picked to finish first in the Pac-12 North and predicted as the Pac-12 champion for the fourth time in five years. Washington State collected 87 votes in the poll, good for fifth place in the Pac-12 North.

The fifth-place prediction is where we thought WSU would be heading in. The Cougars are clearly ahead of California, which is coming off a dismal season. You might be able to argue WSU should be ahead of Oregon State. Media polls, however, are more a reflection of what happened last year rather than a true prediction of next season. If WSU has a great season, the Cougars will be slotted much higher in the poll next year, even though they'd lose Connor Halliday and a few other key pieces.

The Cougars collected 87 points from the 39 ballots which means at least a couple of votes slotted WSU in at least fourth. A first-place vote is worth 6 points, second 5 and so on. All fifth-place votes would yield 78 points, so WSU had to be higher on a couple of ballots. Oregon collected 37 of the 39 first-place votes in the North with Stanford grabbing the other two. UCLA was picked to win the Pac-12 South by a fairly wide margin. Here is a complete look at the voting.

Today, WSU takes the podium at Paramount Studios in LA. Press Conferences with Leach are rarely boring, but just to make it a little more fun, we put together a little game of bingo to help you follow along.

You smell that? It smells like football.

There are only 36 days until Cougar Football and you can tell it's getting close because it's finally time for Pac-12 media day. It's the two days of the years where coaches and players are forced to dress semi-decently, go somewhere most likely pretty far away from home and answer questions they've heard dozens of times before.

Mike Leach, Connor Halliday and Darryl Monroe will head to Paramount Studios in (my new home town of) Los Angeles, CA. They're set to take the stage at 12:50 but the event starts at 9:35. You can see the full schedule on the Pac-12 website here. You can also watch it on that website (even without a cable subscription!), on the Pac-12 Network on TV or on the Pac-12 mobile app (with a participating cable subscription).

Of course, we'll also be covering all the pertinent WSU info on CougCenter, as always. If you just can't wait, here is our look at what to expect from media day 2014.

Now, whenever Mike Leach takes the stage in front of the members of the media we can expect a quotable and fun experience. We here at CougCenter like fun. So, in order to improve your experience, I put together a little BINGO board to help you follow along. Print it out and check off the boxes as you watch the Cougs take the stage. Make sure to play along in the comments on our media day thread and, together, we will see if we can come out victorious.

Good luck and Go Cougs.

Pac-12 media day will begin on Wednesday and viewers will be able to watch on television and online.

With one day of media day no longer sufficient, the Pac-12 media days will be a two-day event this year with the first of the two days on Wednesday. The addition of a second day will draw out the process a bit, but media day will be mostly the same event as always. Players and coaches will get shuttled from interview to interview with the assembled media trying to pull enough info to fill out a month of season previews.

A few tidbits from one-on-one or small group interviews always leak out, but the highlight of media day is the on-stage interviews. Each head coach will be joined by two players for the on-stage interview. Sometimes there are some interesting comments. Other times there are a lot of cliches, non-answers and a bunch of people who just want to get it over with. With the event being stretched out to two days, six schools will take part in their main media session on Wednesday with the other six set for Thursday. WSU will be the final group to take the stage on Wednesday, with a tentative time of 12:50 p.m. Mike Leach, Connor Halliday and Darryl Monroe will represent WSU.

In addition to the team interviews, the Pac-12 media poll will be released on Wednesday and commissioner Larry Scott will hold a media session on stage. The event will begin at 9 a.m. and viewers have options to watch on television or online. The Pac-12 Network will have complete coverage with its broadcast scheduled to run from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. PT. That coverage will also be available online via a live and free online stream. The subscription requirement has been lifted, allowing everyone to stream it live.

Here is the full schedule for the day.
