The bowl prognosticators favor an appearance in the Las Vegas Bowl or the Sun Bowl for WSU.

The Washington State Cougars are bowl eligible.

Nope, that's not going to get old.

A couple weeks ago, we did a post on where the Cougs were projected to go as they sat with five wins staring down Stanford. Now, with six wins after beating Arizona State and three games to go, the real planning can begin. First, lets get you familiarized with the Pac-12's bowl tie-ins:

#1 Team: Rose Bowl* vs. Big Ten (Pasadena, CA)
#2 Team: Alamo Bowl vs. Big 12 (San Antonio, TX)
#3 Team: Holiday Bowl vs. Big Ten (San Diego, CA)
#4 Team: Foster Farms Bowl vs. Big Ten (Santa Clara, CA)
#5 Team: Sun Bowl vs. ACC (El Paso, TX)
#6 Team: Las Vegas Bowl vs. Mountain West (Las Vegas, NV)
#7 Team: Cactus Bowl vs. Big 12 (Phoenix, AZ)

*If Stanford ends up in the College Football Playoff, everything shifts up a spot. The #2 team wouldn't necessarily be whoever loses to the Cardinal in the Pac-12 Championship in this scenario.

Bowls can reach down as much as one spot to grab a team if they so choose so finishing seventh overall in the conference could mean a trip to Tempe or to Sin City if the Las vegas Bowl would rather have the Cougs than whoever finishes sixth. These are only the tie-ins as well; if more than seven teams end up eligible (which seems likely after a look at the conference schedule), teams can lobby to get into "at-large" bowls, as was the case for WSU with the New Mexico Bowl in 2013.

Even if, heaven forbid, the Cougs dropped their three remaining games, they'd still be able to find a home with 38 bowl games on the schedule this year (that doesn't include the CFP because, well, they aren't THAT good. Yet.). So no matter what, the Cougs are in good shape for the postseason. If the season ended today, they'd be in a mess of three teams in fourth place sitting at 6-3 overall, 4-2 in conference with USC and Oregon.

So, now that we've gotten that primer out of the way, where to the prognosticators think WSU will land?

SB Nation: Armed Forces Bowl, Dec. 29th, 11 a.m. on ESPN

This would be an at-large bid for the Cougs so Jason Kirk and the gang at the mothership are pegging them for probably a 7th place or worse finish in the conference overall. The Air Force Falcons would be their projected opponent in this game, played at Amon G. Carter Stadium in Fort Worth. I don't think the Cougs will end up here because the likelihood of at least six teams being ahead of them if they're, at a minimum, 7-5 to the end the year is very low.

On a personal note though, this is like the only game I could go to since it's on a Tuesday go yay Armed Forces Bowl!

ESPN: Las Vegas Bowl, Dec. 19th, 12:30 p.m. on ABC or Sun Bowl, Dec. 26th, 11 a.m. on CBS

Mark Schlabach and Brett McMurphy pick the games for ESPN and they actually just flipped predictions from what they had a couple of weeks ago. In this week's edition of their forecast, McMurphy thinks the Cougs will take on Boise State in Vegas while Schlabach thinks they'd face Louisville in El Paso.

Try a polite handshake this time, Bobby, your brother tried to get a little salty with Mike and it didn't go well.

CBS: Sun Bowl

Jerry Palm is staying remarkably consistent with his pick; it's the exact same, opponent included (Louisville) as his prediction two weeks ago.

Sporting News: Foster Farms Bowl, Dec. 26th, 6:15 p.m. on ESPN

The Sporting News' Bill Bender thinks the most of Washington State from the bowl predictions I could find, slotting them for an appearance in Santa Clara the day after Christmas. Bender thinks WSU would be starring down the Penn State Nittany Lions in this match up in a field that's definitely going to be well taken care of and not one big giant mud puddle.

Campus Insiders: Las Vegas Bowl

Another vote for an appearance in Sin City, this one coming from Pete Fiutak of Campus Insiders. He predicts a double Cougs match-up, slotting Brigham Young into the game as WSU's opponent. Another reminder: Go Cougs is OUR thing, BYU. OUR THING! Get your own ... thing.

That's all we've got for now. We'll keep adding projections to this story as they become available this week.

The Washington State Cougars are bowl eligible. Nope, still not old.

The Cougs came back from 14 down to open the game, sealing a 14-point win with Dom Williams' 75-yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter.

Happy highlights! From the Pac-12, we have full game highlights. You'll note that it's Arizona State heavy to start, and then all of a sudden there were a lot of highlight plays by the Cougs.

The two biggest plays, perhaps, came from Dom Williams, the first of which followed a weird situation involving Pac-12 refs (surprise!). After getting another shot at 4th down after an inadvertent whistle that probably wouldn't have change the outcome of the play, Williams found room on a slant and found the end zone.

Then, with Arizona State only down seven following a bad WSU punt that led to a field goal, Williams again found room inside on a slant to open the next drive. This time, he made a quick outside cut, lost a defender, and took it 75 yards to put an exclamation point on a huge, dominant comeback win.

Down 14-0, Washington State could've rolled over. The Cougs didn't, though, and this team just doesn't die.

Coming off a close loss to a top-10 Stanford team, Washington State was ripe for a letdown. That's what you've been trained to think after watching the last decade of Cougar football. That's probably what you should think after seeing Arizona State march up and down the field for a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. And after Luke Falk put the defense right back on the field with an interception, it was hard not to think "Oh, this again."

Yet this is what followed: A fourth down stop to keep the score at 14-0; a defense that gave up 10 points the rest of the way; an offense that closed the gap to four by halftime, then exploded for 21 points in the fourth quarter to not just finish the game, but bury the Sun Devils. Welcome to the new Washington State football.

It's natural to think this team is teetering on the edge of disaster. It's been what feels like forever since the Cougs were good. Not just good in spurts, but a team that could walk out onto the field with anyone in the conference and be in a position to win.

What you saw on Saturday was another question answered. Could this team come back from having a shot to beat Stanford on the last play of the game and put away an opponent they were favored against? Could they spot a team 14 points and claw back? The answer, like everything since a frustrating loss to Cal, was a resounding yes.

Walk into Oregon with the best shot to beat the Ducks in quite some time and take care of business? Check. Demolish a team you're better than to follow it up? Check. Go on the road and prove it's real against a desperate Arizona team? Check. Hang with a top-10 team until the very end? Check.

Since taking a shot in the mouth from Portland State and shakily navigating the next three games, Washington State has steadily, even surprisingly, improved each and every game. They've shown you something every time they've taken the field, and they've never rolled over and died. Not when they had to mount a desperation drive to get to overtime (and then beat) the Ducks; not when Arizona State had its foot on their throat in the first quarter.

This team has learned not only to limit mistakes on the defensive side of the ball, but to punish teams for mistakes. The defense survived the early onslaught, bowed up and made a huge fourth down stop, and spent the rest of the day making ASU work.

Against Stanford, there was a letdown after the fumble-that-wasn't for a few minutes of game clock. It made the difference in the game. There was a chance for the same thing to happen against the Sun Devils, after a 13-second drive in the fourth quarter that led to a 6-yard punt. All the defense did was stiffen up once again, make a huge third-down stop with their backs against the wall, limiting Arizona State to a field goal.

And the offense did exactly what should have been expected: It closed out a game with authority. One play after Arizona State cut the Cougs' lead to seven, Luke Falk hit Dom Williams on a slant and watched him go 75 yards for a touchdown. That's why you continue to do what you do best to close out a game.

You're watching a team continue to grow every week, and I don't think they've figured out where their ceiling is yet. But this isn't because of inconsistency. They simply keep improving and raising the bar for themselves each time they step onto the field.

This should feel weird to you. It's been a decade since Washington State has played like this while answering question after question along the way. We've seen what we've thought were program-changing wins followed by huge letdowns and more of the same. We've seen inconsistency, and inability to finish games, and games where they simply roll over and die. Despite how they started this year, this team simply does not quit and has been in every single game its played, with a chance to win each of them.

The Cougs can win every game left on their schedule. You shouldn't just consider this a possibility at this point. You should expect it.

The Cougs started off terribly, but finished incredibly.

Well that was some game, wasn't it? Like many of you, I've been watching Cougar football for as long as I can remember. In all that time, I can't recall a game as weird as this one. I mean, I think I'm going to have to watch "Pac-12 in 60" on Tuesday just to make sure the Cougars won. That's how strange Saturday's game felt. WSU started off so poorly that it felt like there was no chance they'd get back in it, let alone win.

For the second straight week, the offense began the game very poorly. Heck, before the game even began, rumors of a Joe Dahl injury were proven true, causing a big shift among WSU's offensive linemen. Eduardo Middleton shifted from right guard to left, for the first time in his career. Jacob Seydel made his first career start at right guard. Gunnar Eklund shifted to Dahl's spot at left tackle, the first time he'd played there since 2013. After a couple early miscommunications, the jumbled line didn't miss a beat. Incredible.

Unlike last Saturday, the defense wasn't there to bail them out, at least not right away. Arizona State was doing whatever it wanted on offense, and WSU's tacklers were bouncing off ASU running backs like they had a force field around them. The Sun Devils were seemingly running the same exact screen pass every time they needed a first down, and WSU was powerless to stop it.

Todd Graham and his exotic blitz packages had taken up residence inside Luke Falk's head, and we were seeing the hesitant Falk that we saw so much early in the season. When Falk horribly overthrew everybody but an ASU safety, resulting in an interception, I thought the game was pretty much over. However, this team of Cougars, thankfully, had other ideas.

The defense forced a monumental stop inside its own five yardline, and the offense finally got things in gear. They didn't exactly hum before halftime, but they did enough to keep the team within reach. Sure, they were aided by an inadvertent whistle on fourth down, but after what happened last week with the officials, you'll excuse me if I don't feel the least bit bad about WSU getting another crack at the endzone. Hell, they still had to execute the play and score a touchdown. That's exactly what they did.

The halftime score may have been 14-10, but it felt like the Cougs were down by three touchdowns. The second half was entirely different. WSU came out and stopped ASU's opening drive, then went 94 yards in eight plays to take their first lead, on a screen pass to Keith Harrington. They were finally making ASU pay for the blitzes. The defense came right back out and got another stop, but #specialforces again refused to let us have nice things, and ASU retook the lead.

No matter. The Cougs went back down and scored again. Last week we all wished John Thompson had stretched the ball out on the two-point conversion. This time, he did exactly that. Touchdown. Following ANOTHER stop by the defense and the and one of the greatest punts in the history of football, WSU calmly went 99 (!!!) yards in just seven plays, highlighted by a huge Robert Lewis catch-and-run, to take a 10 point lead.

When the Cougs got the ball back, they held it for all of about 15 seconds, and it appeared that a golden opportunity to step on ASU's neck had slipped away. Following a six yard punt (that's right, a six yard punt, which was not deflected), ASU had excellent field position. Once more, Alex Grinch's defense kept them out of the endzone, and the lead was still seven points. Every one of us was probably hoping for a couple first downs, enabling WSU to run out the clock. That's not exactly what happened.

You might recall the 2013 Utah game, in which WSU needed a win to clinch a bowl. The Cougs had the ball with just under five minutes left, clinging to a five point lead. Needing a couple first downs to salt it away, Connor Halliday hit Dom Williams on a slant route. Williams avoided the safety and scored a 71-yard touchdown. On the ensuing drive, WSU intercepted a pass deep in its own territory to ice the game and clinch a bowl.

Saturday, WSU badly needed a couple first downs to drain the clock and win the game. Luke Falk hit Dom Williams on a strikingly similar route to the one against Utah. Again, Williams avoided a tackle and took it the distance. Again, WSU intercepted a pass (this time, Darrien Molton snagged the first of his young career) and iced the game. Once again, the Cougars are headed to a bowl game. In a few previous games this season, WSU got out to a decent lead and had to hang on by the skin of its teeth. Saturday, WSU outscored ASU 21-3 in the fourth quarter. That, ladies and gentlemen, is how you finish a game.

I remember walking out of the Portland State game and telling my brother that I wasn't going to renew my season tickets next year. The return on investment, from a wins standpoint, just wasn't there. I was tired of buying two season tickets when I was lucky just to make it to one game a year. This team, amazingly, has made me do a 180. Not in a million years did I think, walking out of that game in the cold and rain, that these Cougars could stage such a turnaround in less than one season. I can't wait for next week (even though I have to wait 'til 1045). I know you can't, either. Go Cougs.
