HCA: Wrapping up the MLB Draft

The MLB Draft is complete and four Cougars were drafted.

WSU Athletic Communications

The 2013 MLB Draft came to a close on Saturday and when all 40 rounds were said and done, four Cougars heard their names called. After Jason Monda went in the sixth round of the draft on Friday, pitcher J.D. Leckenby (14th round), third baseman Adam Nelubowich (18th round) and shortstop Trace Tam Sing (26th round) joined him on Saturday.

All four players have the option of returning for at least another season -- Tam Sing is a redshirt sophomore -- and based on where they were drafted it wouldn't surprise me if three of the four return to Pullman next season. Signing bonuses drop considerably once you get past the 10th round so it's not hard to believe Leckenby, Nelubowich or Tam Sing could return to school and boost their draft stock.

Monda is a different story. He could also boost his draft stock with another strong season, but if he returned he would be turning down a bonus worth upwards of $200,000. That may be too much to resist, we'll have to wait and see. The others could decide they just want to start their pro careers and start working their way up a system as well.
