Cougars lose first game of Great Alaskan Shootout

Not a good start to the holiday tournament.

"Gauchos blast Cougars, advance to semis"

No, you are not still in a state of turkey comatose. That is an actual headline and unfortunately it isn't describing the Houston Cougars. Washington State lost its opening game of the Great Alaskan Shootout on Thursday to UC Santa Barbara and did so in blowout fashion. The Cougars didn't have an off night and lose to the Gauchos by a few points. Instead, WSU got run out of the gym by the Big West team in a 71-43 loss.

On the positive side, UC Santa Barbara is a solid team, checking in at No. 73 in the Kenpom rankings following the game. The Gauchos should have won that game, going up against a WSU team now ranked No. 201. On the down side, it's just another bit of evidence that this season really could be as bad as feared.

Speaking of which ...

The Cougars will take on Rice on Saturday. WSU may be bad, but Rice is significantly worse according to Kenpom, checking in at No. 304.
