WSU basketball teams split on Thursday

The Cougar women get a win while the men's upset bid came up short.

WSU Athletic Communications

For a while, it looked like Thursday was going to be an excellent day for Washington State's two basketball programs. The WSU women's team opened the Pac-12 Tournament with a thrilling 66-64 win against Oregon. The men's team held a lead late in the game against No. 13 Utah only to see its upset bid come up short.

The Cougar women advanced to the next round and meeting with No. 9 Arizona State. Holding off Oregon proved to be a major challenge, but thanks in large part to Lia Galdeira, WSU was able to advance ... barely. Galdeira scored 34 points and Oregon's potential game-winning shot was release just moments after the clock ran out. WSU lost to Arizona State earlier this season. A win on Friday would send WSU to the semifinals for a matchup with either UCLA or Stanford. Getting to that point will be a challenge as ASU comes in with a 26-4 record. The game is set to tip at 11:30 a.m. PT and will be broadcast on Pac-12 Network.

The men's team took a 48-41 lead with 8:58 to play against the Utes, but it was all downhill from there. Utah quickly erased the lead with a 7-0 run. Utah finally went ahead 53-50 and that would be that. The Utes closed the game on a 17-7 run to put away WSU. The Utes shot the ball extremely well -- especially from deep -- late in the game while WSU went cold. WSU will close out the regular season on Saturday against Colorado on senior night.
