Washington State Cougars forward Robert Franks has been named to the Pac-12’s 10-man all-conference first team, the league announced Monday.
Franks, the conference’s “most improved” player last year, improved again to lead the conference in scoring with 22.1 points per game while also averaging 7.4 rebounds — good for seventh in the conference. In terms of advanced metrics, he trailed only Oregon State Beavers forward Tres Tinkle in offensive efficiency among high-usage players.
In other words, Franks was everything anyone could have hoped for — individually, at least — when he made the decision last April to withdraw from the NBA Draft and return for his senior season, even if it didn’t translate into team success — the Cougars finished in 11th place in the Pac-12 for the second consecutive season.
Another bright spot in an otherwise dreary season was the play of freshman CJ Elleby, which was also rewarded today when he was named to the five-man all-freshman team. It was a remarkable achievement for the lightly recruited newcomer from Seattle, who averaged 14.9 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists — all of which are in the top 16 in the conference.
There’s an outside chance Elleby could be named the conference’s freshman of the year, but that would seem more likely to go to Luguentz Dort, who was the only freshman on the all-conference second team.
