New Washington head coach Chris Petersen announced the majority of his coaching staff on Monday and it includes two former WSU coaches.
Jeff Choate, who coached linebackers in 2012, is the Huskies new defensive line coach and special teams coordinator. If you're scoring at home, this is Choate's fifth job in less than two years. He was Boise State's special teams coordinator and nickel back coach before being hired by WSU in early January, 2012. He spent a season in Pullman then moved to UTEP as defensive coordinator in January of 2013. That didn't last long and he jumped to Florida in April, 2013 to coach linebackers. Choate resigned from Florida earlier this month and landed at Washington. At this point, he must be an exceptional packer.
Former WSU tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator Rich Rasmussen is also part of the staff and will serve as the director of player personnel. Rasmussen came with Paul Wulff from Eastern Washington and landed as the director of pro personnel at Boise State after Wulff was fired. Rasmussen may have garnered the most attention during his WSU career for the comments he made during a Cougfan chat after Asante Cleveland flipped from WSU to Miami:
Unfortunately, Asante chose to go a different direction at the 11th hour. It put us in a difficult situation due to the timing of his decision. Some of the feedback we received from his family was the negativity towards our offense on the blogs at times. This was something that they read during the course of the season, and it was a bit of a concern to them during the recruiting process. Was that the reason why he changed and went another direction? I don't know. But it may have played a part in their thought process.
