Nolan Washington will start against Southern Utah

WSU is getting healthy in the secondary and as a result, Daquawn Brown will move back into a backup role.

Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

With Southern Utah on the schedule this week, many are expecting WSU to get healthy statistically on Saturday. WSU may indeed pad some numbers against Southern Utah, but the Cougars are also getting healthy physically.

Nolan Washington and Anthony Carpenter participated in practice again on Wednesday and both are expected to play on Saturday. In fact. according to Christian Caple, Mike Breske said Washington will start. That means freshman Daquawn Brown will return to a backup role, although I'd expect him to play quite a bit.

Speaking of Christian, his time on the WSU beat is limited as he will soon head to the Tacoma News Tribune.

Christian did a tremendous job filling the shoes of Vince Grippi and now someone else will have the task of replacing him. He'll stay on until the Stanford game and then we'll see where things go from there. Maybe Grippi will return, we can hope.

Yeah, it's not an area they've necessarily excelled in, but defensive coordinator Mike Breske said their run fits were pretty solid for the most part against USC. I think if they have trouble containing Southern Utah, that might point to a larger problem. But USC and Auburn are both physical, run-oriented teams, so you kind of have to take your medicine against those guys, to a certain extent.

It doesn't appear that this will be a big recruiting weekend for Washington State, but the Cougars always have visitors on hand, and this weekend, they'll use last week's win against USC -- which is still resonating with recruits -- combined with a win over Southern Utah in their home opener, to land at least one commitment.
