We already knew the who of WSU's 2014 football schedule, but now we know the when and where. WSU and the rest of the Pac-12 officially announced next year's schedules on Wednesday.
As we've known for a few months, Washington State's 2014 season will kick off on August 28 against Rutgers in Seattle. Like WSU, Rutgers finished this year with a 6-7 record, although the Cougars fared significantly better in the advanced rankings. The season will open on a Thursday, which is weird, but it is Labor Day Weekend.
From there, the Cougars will go on the road to play Nevada before wrapping up the non-conference schedule at home against Portland State. That game will be significant, as it will be the first played in Martin Stadium with the completed football operations building. The questions of which tunnel will the players come out of and where will the touchdown cannon go will finally be answered.
WSU opens Pac-12 play at home against Oregon on September 20, before traveling to Utah and returning home to face California. Depending on what you think about the Cougar's prospects in 2014, a 5-1 start seems possible. That's easy to say in January, but two of the more-winnable Pac-12 games will be played in the first three weeks of conference play. The Cal game will also be homecoming.
The Cougars will play Stanford on a Friday, but the game is on the road, so no travel issues for WSU fans. The first bye week hits before back-to-back home games against Arizona and USC. The Arizona game will be Dad's Weekend. WSU will then play two straight road games at Oregon State and Arizona State, but those games will be sandwiched around the second bye week of the year.
The regular season will come to a close with the Apple Cup in Pullman. Following two seasons of Black Friday Apple Cups, the game will move back to Saturday, as Craig detailed earlier this week.

So, there you have it. Those of you planning to attend a road game can start making your travel plans. Overall, it's hard to imagine WSU having a much better schedule with the same slate of games. No back-to-back road games. No weekday games in Pullman. The longest break from playing in Martin Stadium will be three weeks and include a bye. No home game the Saturday before Thanksgiving. The Cougars have gotten the short end of the scheduling stick in previous years, but that is not the case this season.
