Fall camp is officially underway in Lewiston, marking the unofficial start to the 2014 football season. That also means optimism levels may be the highest they will be all year. It's very easy to be optimistic at the start of any fall camp. The reports are all positive, the reality of the previous season is a distant memory and nothing negative has happened yet that could cause a change of opinion.
That could change in a week or two depending on how fall camp goes. Severe issues at a position or a major injury can really put a damper on things. We're not going to worry about that quite yet though and instead check the optimism levels now, before doing it again at the end of fall camp.
So as of this very moment, knowing what you know now, what are your expectations for the 2014 season?
For me, so much of this season comes down to how the offensive line comes together. If Clay McGuire can mold a solid starting five, I think the six-win range is correct. If the offensive line really performs, seven or even eight wins could be at least possible. If the opposite happens and Connor Halliday is lucky to have two seconds to throw, I think the Cougars drop into the four-win realm.
At this point, I'm fairly confident the offensive line will be good enough so my current expectations are six wins. We'll see how that changes based on the happenings from fall camp.
With the first practice finally here, what are your expectations?
