Washington State completes Day 1 of spring football

The first of 15 practices is in the books.

Scott Olmos-USA TODAY Sports

WSU hit the practice field on Thursday for the first of 15 spring football workouts. Wearing helmets, the team went through drills for the first time since the Apple Cup. It was also the debut of the new coaches, including new defensive coordinator Alex Grinch.

After practice, Mike Leach said a lot of what he says after every first spring practice. Grinch said some similar things including that he was happy with the offseason work put in and that the team was able to line up successfully and is picking up the defense.

When talking about the quarterbacks, Leach praised Luke Falk's ability to command the offense and his knowledge of how things should operate. When it came to redshirt freshman Peyton Bender, Leach appeared to be more enamored with his arm, commenting on his quick release and saying he can be explosive with his arm talent. That is seemingly very high praise considering how much emphasis Leach puts on making explosive plays on offense.

The Cougars will be back at it on Saturday after taking Friday off.

Washington State Cougars quarterback competition could go a while - Pac-12 Blog - ESPN

If 2014 was the Pac-12's year of the quarterback, then 2015 -- at least its spring -- will focus largely on their replacements. Obviously, the Oregon and UCLA quarterback situations will be closely monitored and draw national scrutiny. Oregon State is replacing the league's all-time leading passer. Even with Travis Wilson getting the snaps at Utah, there's a dusting of potential drama come fall when Kendal Thompson is expected to return.
