WSU moves up to No. 23 in AP, coaches polls

That’s what beating a conference foe by 62 points will do for you.

Following a 69-7 demolition of Arizona to move to 7-2 on the season, WSU moved up to No. 23 in both the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches polls.

In another week, such an impressive win might have resulted in a bigger jump, but there were unusually few upsets in the bottom half of the top 25 yesterday. Two developments helped WSU:

  • Baylor got dumped by TCU, which caused the Bears to tumble to No. 25 in both polls; and
  • Boise State posted yet another unimpressive win, this time over San Jose State, causing the Cougs to leapfrog the Broncos.

As for the rest of the Pac-12, Washington held steady at No. 4 in both polls after whipping WSU next opponent, Cal, last night; thanks to losses by Nebraska, Florida and LSU, Utah moved up to No. 13 (AP) and No. 12 (coaches) despite not playing, and Colorado moved up to No. 15 and No. 16. Surging USC leads the “others receiving votes” category.
