Cody O’Connell named first team USA today All-American

The Nation’s Newspaper honors the offensive guard.

Another day, another honor for Cougar offensive guard Cody O’Connell as USA Today has tabbed the 6-foot-9, 368-pounder to their first team. This follows the Associated Press putting the road grader on the first team as well. Pro Football Focus named him to their second team earlier in the day.

O’Connell was WSU’s first consensus All-American since 2005 last season in his first season starting as a junior. He was of course infamously left off the All-Pac-12 team.

Other Pac-12 players on the first team are USC quarterback Sam Darnold and linebacker Cameron Smith as well as Washington linebacker Azeem Victor. Utah punter Mitch Wishnowsky rounds out the first team for the Conference of Champions.

Second team honorees include Washington lineman Trey Adams and running back Myles Gaskin. USC cornerback Iman Marshall also shows up on the second unit.

It’s hard to remember a Cougar player so decorated coming into the season. You might have to go all the way back to Jason Hanson. The Mike Leach era sure is fun isn’t it?
