PULLMAN, WA - SEPTEMBER 11: Washington State EDGE Quinn Roff (20) pressures the quarterback during the second half of a non-conference matchup between the Portland State Vikings and the Washington State Cougars on September 11, 2021, at Martin Stadium in Pullman, WA. Jack Ellis/CougCenter

It took a week longer than most fans expected, but the Washington State Cougars earned their first win of 2021 against FCS Portland State by a score of 44-24. Quarterback Jayden de Laura seemingly locked down the starting job with a 303 passing yards and 4 total TD performance against the Vikings.

Cougar rookies showed flashes on Saturday night — WR De’Zhaun Stribling finished third in receptions with 65 yards on 5 catches while DE Andrew Edson recovered a fumble and was *this* close to his first career sack.

The optimistic fan saw a much more energized offense with had success through the air and on the ground, while the pessimists will wring their hands on the 420 yards given up on defense. This is at least in part due to a heavy rotation of fresh faces later in the game, but that will not lead to positive results as the competition gets stiffer going forward.

PAC 12 play begins next week as the men of Troy — fresh off an embarrassing home loss to Stanford — travel north to the Palouse. CougCenter was at Gesa Field covering the game’s biggest moments and plays. Enjoy!
