When it comes to college football recruiting, no statement is truer than the idea nothing means anything until the players sign on the dotted line. Verbal commitments, soft commitments, solid commitments. None of it matters until signing day. Players decommit and recommit to the same school on the same day ... before decommitting again. If something in recruiting surprises you, it's probably because you haven't been following it long enough.
Must Reads
With that said, recruiting isn't always unpredictable shenanigan after unpredictable shenanigan. With six players enrolling this week, WSU currently has 18 players verbally committed to signing in February. Let's check in on each to find out the latest.
Zaire Andre, WR, Inglewood, Calif.
Committed since: 5/28/13
WSU visit: 9/21/13
Scheduled visits: None
Update: According to Britton Ransford of WazzuWatch, WSU outside receivers coach did an in home visit with Andre in December. With no visits scheduled, Andre appears to be a very solid verbal. Here are some updated senior year highlights.
Peyton Bender, QB, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Committed since: 3/30/13
WSU visit: 12/13/13
Scheduled visits: None
Update: Bender took his official to Pullman in December and is reportedly trying to sell Deion Hallmon on WSU according to Keenan Bowen of Coug247, so I'd say that's a good sign he's locked in. Bender broke his collarbone during his senior season, although it shouldn't be an issue by the time fall camp rolls around. Mike Leach is reportedly making an in home visit to Bender's house tonight.
Squally Canada, RB, Milpitas, Calif.
Committed since: 12/14/13
WSU visit: 12/13/13
Scheduled visits: None
Update: Canada appears to be a very solid commit and WSU has cancelled visits with other running backs, so it would seem things are set there.
Andre Dillard, OL, Woodinville, Wash.
Committed since: 12/9/13
WSU visit: 1/17/14
Scheduled visits: None
Update: Dillard will take his official visit to Pullman this weekend. His dad played for the Cougars and he committed shortly after receiving the offer. Unless something unexpected happens, Dillard is a solid verbal.
Brandon Evers, OL, Redding, Calif.
Committed since: 12/10/13
WSU visit: 12/7/13
Scheduled visits: None
Update: Evers didn't draw a ton of recruiting attention with his other reported offer coming from San Diego State. When he committed, he said he was still considering a trip to San Diego State, sometime in January, but there aren't any updates on if/when that will happen.
Kingtson Fernandez, DE, Kapolei, Hawaii
Committed since: 12/14/13
WSU visit: 12/13/13
Scheduled visits: None
Update: Fernandez drew interest from a few other schools, including Arizona State. According to Cougfan, the Sun Devils wanted Fernandez to take an official visit to Tempe, but he declined.
Kevin Griffin, CB, Concord, Calif.
Committed since: 6/25/13
WSU visit: 10/12/13
Scheduled visits: None
Update: Griffin has been committed since June, doesn't have any other major offers or visits, and received an in home visit from WSU in December. He sounds solid to WSU.
Sulaiman Hameed, CB, Alameda, Calif.
Committed since: 1/6/14
WSU visit: 1/17/14
Scheduled visits: None
Update: Hameed will take his official visit to Pullman this weekend. He doesn't have any other trips scheduled, according to the recruiting services. He does hold an offer from ASU.
Keith Harrington, RB, St. Petersburg, Fla.
Committed since: 5/30/13
WSU visit: 1/17/14
Scheduled visits: None
Update: Harrington blew up in a recent all star game, racking up more than 300 yards. While that might generate some extra attention, he said he's still a solid commit to WSU. He will also be visiting this weekend. "I'm still going to Washington State," Harrington said, via Tampa Bay Times. "I like the offense they run. I'll be a slot receiver. I'm not looking at any other schools."
Greg Hoyd, LB, Tustin, Calif.
Committed since: 5/13/13
WSU visit: 10/12/13
Scheduled visits: None
Update: Only Bender has been committed longer than Hoyd. He has a couple of other notable offers, including Duke and NC State, but doesn't have any official visits planned.
Frank Luvu, LB, Pago Pago, American Samoa
Committed since: 8/23/13
WSU visit: 12/13/13
Scheduled visits: None
Update: Has reported offers from Oklahoma State and Oregon State, but apparently doesn't have any interest in the OSUs.
Miguel Machado, OL, Pasadena, Calif.
Committed since: 12/12/13
WSU visit: 11/22/13
Scheduled visits: Washington
Update: Machado visited Michigan State, WSU and Marshall before verbally committing to the Cougars. He appeared to shut things down, but picked up an offer from Washington on Wednesday and will apparently take a visit to Washington, based on a Scout.com message board headline.
Hercules Mata'afa, DE, Lahaina, Hawaii
Committed since: 12/16/13
WSU visit: 10/12/13
Scheduled visits: None
Update: He took a visits to OSU and WSU before committing. Doesn't appear to have any other visits planned, so barring a late change, should be headed to Pullman.
Ronald Monroe, WR, Richmond, Texas
Committed since: 12/26/13
WSU visit: 12/7/13
Scheduled visits: Utah - 1/17, San Jose State - 1/24, BYU - 1/31
Update: Scout lists Monroe with two upcoming visits, 247 adds the Utah visit, so we'll go with three for now. He committed to WSU as a wide receiver, but played quarterback in high school. If one of the other schools offers him the chance to play quarterback, that could cause him to change course.
Patrick Porter, CB, Tuscaloosa, Ala.
Committed since: 1/10/14
WSU visit: 1/17/14
Scheduled visits: Minnesota - 1/24?, Toledo - 1/31?, Miami -1/31?
Update: Porter is an interesting case as he committed before taking his official visits. The scouting services differ a bit, with Rivals saying only a visit to Toledo on Jan. 31. 247 has a visit to Minnesota on the 24th and Miami the 31st. Scout has Minnesota on the 24th and Toledo on the 31st. Here is what Britton said in our comments when Porter committed:
Porter is vastly underrated because of the talent pool in Alabama. He's probably one of the top-25 prospects in Alabama and should end up being a high-end three-star prospect when new rankings come out later this month. He's only visiting Toledo on Jan. 31 and I don't believe the Miami interest was all it was hyped up to be. Minnesota is out of the picture. This pledge will stick.
Ngalu Tapa, DT, Sacramento, Calif.
Committed since: 10/23/13
WSU visit: 12/13/13
Scheduled visits: None
Update: Has offers from Arizona and Hawaii, but no reported official visits. Joe Davidson of the Sacramento Bee called Tapa a "dominating player" recently. Let's hope that continues in Pullman.
Joseph Turner, CB, San Mateo, Calif.
Committed since: 7/28/13
WSU visit: 10/11/13
Scheduled visits: None
Update: Reported offers from Hawaii and Utah State, but no visits scheduled. When he first committed, there were reports he planned to enroll early. That did not happen, but doesn't mean he still won't be headed to Pullman in the summer.
Tristan Vizcaino, K, Chino Hills, Calif.
Committed since: 7/7/13
WSU visit: 11/23/13
Scheduled visits: None
Update: Vizcaino picked up an offer from Washington in late November to go along with his offer from Nevada. He reportedly isn't taking visits to either though. There is a very good chance he is either WSU's kicker or punter and possibly both next season.
For those of you who didn't read any of the above and just scrolled to the end, here is the gist: Porter and Monroe will take visits and Machado received an offer from Washington and will reportedly visit the Huskies. Everyone else appears to be solid ... as of now.
