The 2014 recruiting class is the focus right now, but on Sunday a recruit from the 2013 cycle stole the headlines. That's because word came out that former 4-star recruit and Texas A&M wide receiver Sebastian LaRue was planning on transferring to WSU.
Must Reads
Justin Hopkins of 247Sports was able to catch up with LaRue on Sunday and he provided some insight into his decision to head to Pullman.
"It's a done deal, I'm heading to Washington State," LaRue said, via 247Sports. "I'm heading up this week to report and get into school. I have to sit out for a year but then I'll be ready to go."
There are two important takeaways from that quote. First, LaRue is apparently planning on enrolling this semester. That is a nice bonus as he'll be able to go through offseason conditioning with the team and spring football, even if he's forced to sit out a year because of transfer rules. By enrolling this semester, there is a chance WSU could count LaRue's scholarship against the 2013 allocation. Otherwise he'll essentially count like a recruit in the 2014 class.
Speaking of sitting out a year, LaRue saying he'll sit out goes against Bruce Feldman's report that LaRue was planning to file an appeal to play in 2014. That could still happen, but from the quote, it sounds like LaRue is planning to sit out in 2014 and have three years to play three beginning in 2015.
LaRue had more than two dozen reported offers coming out of high school, including offers from 11 of the 12 Pac-12 teams, Ohio State, Michigan and Notre Dame. He would have presumably drawn significant interest as a transfer, so why did he pick WSU?
"They recruited me real hard out of high school. They throw the ball a ton so it's a great offense for a receiver. The coaches were real excited when I told them and I think this is a good thing for me."
I knew Connor Halliday setting the NCAA record for attempts in a game would pay off somehow. Take that, Nick Aliotti. The Cougars do indeed throw the ball a ton and LaRue figures to be on the end of a good amount of those passes when he is eligible. WSU has a nice stockpile at wide receiver and while that group includes some very talented players, I'm not sure any of them have the raw ability of LaRue. He has legitimate 4.4 speed and is extremely explosive.
If I had to make a way too early prediction, I would guess the 2015 starting lineup at wide receiver looks something like this:
X - Dom Williams, Y - River Cracraft, H - Sebastian LaRue, Z - Gabe Marks
There is still obviously a ton of time between now and then, but that is absolutely nightmare fuel for opposing defensive backs. A trips formation with Cracraft, LaRue and Marks lined up on the same side is going to be a terror to defend.
That is still a ways off, so let's not get too far ahead of ourselves. Instead, here are some more of LaRue's junior highlights (note: music is NSFW):
