In the recruiting update yesterday, I mentioned WSU verbal commit Ronald Monroe was taking a visit to Vanderbilt this weekend. He's still taking the visit, but it won't be as a Cougar commit. Monroe, who committed to WSU as a wide receiver, decommitted on Wednesday, according to Britton Ransford of Wazzu Watch.
The decision doesn't come as a major surprise. Monroe has received considerable interest since he verbally committed with a couple teams offering him as a quarterback. That included Vanderbilt and the offer to play quarterback was the main reason in Monroe's decision.
"I decommitted from Washington State today because I don't really want to play wide receiver, so I'm looking at three schools right now to play quarterback and that's Vanderbilt, Utah State, and San Jose State," Monroe said, via Vandy Sports.
Interestingly enough, Monroe's interest in Vanderbilt came after new Commodores defensive coordinator Kenwick Thompson joined the Vanderbilt staff. He was previously at San Jose State and the Spartans were also recruiting Monroe. Thompson was familiar with Monroe, showed the other Vanderbilt coaches his film and the offer came. Monroe played quarterback in high school, so it shouldn't be a surprise to see him want to pursue that route in college, especially with an option like Vanderbilt.
Where does that leave WSU? The obvious answer is with one more spot to fill. Beyond that, it's difficult to say. Even without Monroe, the Cougars have four wide receivers committed in the 2014 class. Calvin Green is already in school. Zaire Andre and Keith Harrington are both solid commitments and Barry Ware verbally committed on Sunday. Ware is the only one of those players who projects as an outside receiver, which Monroe also did, so the Cougars could be in the market for another big receiver. If that is the case, Brayden Lenius is likely the No. 1 target. The 6-foot-5, 3-star prospect took an official visit to WSU two weeks ago. He visited Minnesota last week and will trip to Washington this week.
There is also a chance the Cougars will use the open spot to fill another position of need. We will have to wait and see. The only thing we know for sure is Monroe is no longer in the plans for the Cougars.

Railey's low minutes due to lack of offense - SportsLink - Spokesman.com - Jan. 29, 2014
Railey did not see extensive minutes at ISU and had to sit out last season under NCAA transfer rules. As such the coaching staff expected him to have some rust. But Bone says that when Railey struggles to put the ball in the basket early in contests it has a negative affect on the rest of his game.
