WSU football recruiting: CB Treshon Broughton officially signs letter of intent

New, comments

Broughton is heading to Pullman after a previous commitment to Oregon State.

Following Mike Riley's rather inexplicable departure to Nebraska, Oregon State had a difficult time hanging on to recruits. Add in a desperate need from Washington State to immediately improve the defensive secondary and you get former Beaver commit and current Cougar cornerback Treshon Broughton who faxed in his letter of intent.

Broughton was rated the 68th best junior college defensive back in the country prior to his sophomore season at Riverside Community College. Broughton finished the year with five interceptions and 11 passes break-ups, good for a tie for second and first on the team respectively. WSU is in desperate need of a secondary that can generate turnovers, one of the leading factors to their success in 2013 that absolutely plummeted in 2014.

With Jeff Farrar and Sebastian LaRue coming off redshirt years, the addition of Broughton makes for some much needed competition in a secondary that is now without their best player in Daquawn Brown.

Broughton also had scholarship offers from California, Fresno State, Oregon State and UAB (sorry, guys). He'll have three years to play two but I'd expect him to play right away.

Brian Anderson's quick evaluation:

Speed. First two highlights are of him 1 - housing a pick from the middle of the field and 2- beating a man with a dead-to-rights angle on a 40 yard sprint to the endzone. Follow that with playing zone against a fade and going stride-for-stride with the receiver while keeping his eyes in the backfield. Showed great coverage in both man and zone, his footwork is outstanding, rarely out of position even though he has the speed to make up for it. Showed a little bump-n-run, but otherwise not overly physical. Real solid tackling in the open field.
