Safety Kameron Powell will officially join his high school teammate Tyler Hilinski in Pullman now that Powell has sent in a signed letter of intent on National Signing Day. Powell said early in the process that he'd like to play with Hilinski in college and the two will now get the chance to do that at the next level.
Powell is ranked as a consensus 3-star recruit by 247 Sports, but Scout pegs him as a 4-star prospect. He's the only true safety in the signing class, a position that has been a troublesome area for the Cougars in recent years. Powell drew interest from several Pac-12 schools with reported offers from Colorado, Utah, Washington and Oregon State among others. Notre Dame made contact recently, but Powell stayed with his nine-month commitment and signed with WSU.
Although he's listed at 5-foot-11 and 175 pounds by some of the recruiting sites, Powell plays bigger than that in highlights. Rivals pegs him at 192 pounds, moving him into a better range for a future Pac-12 safety. The Cougars obviously have a need at safety and have rotated several players in during the last couple of seasons. Darius Lemora and Suliaman Hameed are penciled into starting spots at the moment, but Powell could push for playing time as a true freshman with a strong camp. With several players currently filling out the depth chart, the Cougars may be able to redshirt Powell and give him a year of development before adding him to the mix.
Brian Anderson's quick scouting report
Extremely physical player, looks to deliver knockout shots and can. Aggressive forcing turnovers. Great closing speed, gets into run support really quickly. Outstanding in the open field. Does well reading eyes and beating receivers to the ball. Really a complete package at safety.
