The Washington State Cougars look to rebound from a disappointing loss at USC against the Utah Utes on Saturday. The Utes are coming off a bye after a 21-7 loss to Washington. Utah is 2-1, with wins over FCS Weber State and definitely-not-FCS-how-dare-you-assume-that-they-went-to-the-Orange-Bowl-in-2013 Northern Illinois.
The prevailing assumption is that the Utes are the ultimate Yin and Yang of college football. Utah is believed to have one of the worst offenses in all of Division 1, while also boasting one of the best defenses.
WSU has a pretty dang good offense, and a defense that looked pretty dang good until USC’s mega-athletic receivers drew PIs or made seemingly unstoppable catches. The 39 points scored by USC leave doubt in the ability of the Cougar defense, and that doubt must be where the bettors who have clearly favored Utah live.
This game figures either to be a low-scoring toss-up, or a WSU blowout. Utah isn’t scoring a lot of points, so if WSU can’t score a lot then the Utes will be right there to send the Cougs’ homecoming crowd home with frowns on their faces.
If WSU is able to move the ball as it has through the first four games of the season, we might see a WSU runaway. Who knows?
