The Washington State Cougars visit the California Golden Bears on Saturday afternoon in a battle of Air Raid offenses. Cal head coach Sonny Dykes worked on Mike Leach's staff at Texas Tech, and used the same offensive principles to make a name for himself at Louisiana Tech before heading to Berkeley this season.
This game offers the opportunity for WSU to start 4-2 for the first time since 2006. That year the fourth win came over Oregon State in Corvallis, the last time before today that Washington State was favored on the road against a conference opponent.
Cal's 1-3 record is unimpressive, but it has come against some difficult competition. The Golden Bears opened the season with a loss at home to Northwestern. After a comeback win against FCS Portland State, the Ohio State Buckeyes came to down to hand Cal another loss. Last weekend, a trip to Eugene yielded a 55-16 loss to the Oregon Ducks.
Both fanbases are looking at this game as a necessary win to keep reasonable postseason hopes alive.
