The Washington State Cougars looked to stay undefeated in Pac-12 play when they host the California Golden Blogs on Saturday night. WSU is coming off a 69-7 demolishing of the Arizona Wildcats last Saturday, giving the Cougs their first comfortable victory in weeks, and a seventh-consecutive win. Cal is fighting for a bowl spot, sitting at 4-5, with home games against Stanford and UCLA remaining.
Both teams feature high-scoring offenses, with Cal running a variation of Mike Leach's Air Raid. The last time the two played in Pullman, WSU quarterback Connor Halliday set an NCAA record for passing yards. Despite that, the Cougs missed a 19-yard field goal at the end to fall 60-59. Now, every time forever and ever the Cougs and Bears get together, every college football watcher hopes and prays for a repeat performance.
WSU is favored by 14.5. The Cougs hold the advantage on defense, specifically. Cal's is bad, really bad, among the worst in the country bad. Wazzu faced another really bad defense last week, and that turned out pretty okay.
But Cal can score, and that means they can hang. No doubt this will be a long one, so put a pot of coffee on.
