The Washington State Cougars will host the California Golden Bears for a football game on Saturday afternoon with thousands of cardboard cutout fans in attendance. Both teams are seeking their second win, with undetermined final match-ups still a possibility next Saturday.
The Pac-12 has said that teams need to finish .500 or better to qualify for a bowl, unlike some other conferences, so that does make this a bowl eligibility elimination game. Now, it’s unlikely that there will be enough bowls to go around and these two teams will probably be lower on the pecking order, but stakes are still stakes.
WSU has won the last two times that Cal has visited Pullman, but there always seems to be craziness when these two teams get together. In this shortened season, it’s hard to determine what will happen, but I did my best in this game preview.
This game was previously scheduled for a late start on cable. However, after the Washington Huskies were forced to cancel their game with the Oregon Ducks due to COVID-19 concerns, the Cougs and Cal will be featured in an afternoon slot on an over-the-air channel.
That should make it a few degrees warmer for the players and coaches on the field, especially if there is sun. The weather should be about as good as you can expect for Pullman in December.
