After capping a perfect start to the season with a victory over the USC Trojans, the 5-0 No. 11 Washington State Cougars finally venture away from Pullman to take on the Oregon Ducks tonight.
The Ducks dominated the series for most of a decade, winning eight in a row from 2007-2014, but it’s the Cougs who are now the ranked team and the Cougs who now carry a two-game win streak into Autzen Stadium.
The difference tonight, of course, is that the Ducks bring a new coach into the matchup, having fired Mark Helfrich after four seasons and hired Willie Taggart away from South Florida. Oregon paid a Nike-sized ransom to assemble a dream team coaching staff, which included luring away Colorado defensive coordinator Jim Leavitt and WSU defensive line coach Joe Salave’a.
It’s mostly worked so far, as Oregon enters the contest 4-1 and just outside the top 25. However, the Ducks are missing their starting quarterback, Justin Herbert, who is out with a broken collarbone, and its the Cougs who will take the field as the favorites.
